Île de la Cité walking route
A gentle loop around the island where Paris began.
The Île de la Cité is where Paris began — settled more than two thousand years ago, Roman Lutetia after that, and the medieval heart of the city ever since. A slow loop around it takes under an hour and rewards every step.
Start at the cathedral square, then walk the north quay west toward the Conciergerie’s round towers. Pass the flower market, cross to the Sainte-Chapelle, and continue to the tip of the island at Square du Vert-Galant — a tree-shaded point where the Seine splits around you.
Return along the south quay for the classic river views, then circle behind the cathedral through Square Jean-XXIII to see the apse and flying buttresses — the engineering that makes the light inside possible.
